Small Heli Ski Guide

Friday, May 14th, 2010

If you are passionate about skiing than you must have surely heard of cat skiing. If not, here are a few pointers that will hopefully help you move to the next stage of your passion. Skiing on regular slopes is already pretty exciting to most people, but after a while the thrill just isn’t there anymore, and you just don’t get that rush you used to get before when skiing. This is where cat skiing comes into play. Basically, cat skiing brings back that edge, that thrill and adrenaline rush. Cat skiing requires you to tackle remote slopes where the snow hasn’t been touch yet by anything. Yes, some people argue that this is significantly more dangerous than many other sports, but for true enthusiasts there is nothing more thrilling. The question remains, how can you get to cat skiing slopes? Obviously, there are no ski lifts that can take you there, so the only remaining choices are helicopters or snowcats, depending on how remote the slopes are.

If you are into heli ski, then the best options is to find a group of friends with which you can rent a helicopter for an entire day in order to make the most out of your heli ski experience. In terms of pricing, you should know that it largely depends on the country and the specific region you intend to visit. Snowcat skiing, is a little bit less expensive and it takes more time to get to the starting point when using this option but the results are still the same. You get access to virgin slopes with various levels of difficulty, but if there is a general truth behind cat skiing, I guess it would be that cat skiing is not for beginners. All forms of cat skiing, including heli ski and snowcat skiing are very demanding and will challenge your skills to the limit. You need to make sure that you have all the necessary equipment and also a correct mind set. It goes without saying that safety precautions and instructions are a must any time you go cat skiing in an unknown region.

Most companies offering heli ski services also include extensive safety training sessions that cover all the important aspects of their tours in order to minimize the chances for any accidents. It is also highly advisable that you refrain from using personal helicopters to go cat skiing as this sport involves a great deal of logistics that need to be handled by experienced professionals. Moreover, the majority of heli ski companies offer full lodging and transport included in their service packages, and the service of certified guides and numerous safety equipments for all their customers. When it comes to finding the best destinations, you can direct you searches to North America and Europe, as they are home to the most sought after opportunities. Generally, tour operators offer extensive insight into all the various opportunities and will be able to help you make the right choice.

First Time Skiing - What Ski Apparel is Needed?

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

So you are going to take to the ski slopes for the first time but the whole idea is just rather daunting. Never fear, here are a few tips to get you up and running or should we say skiing. Try to get some time in the gym before going skiing, most often people go on vacations to go skiing and you don’t want to get to the slopes, ski for half a day and then not be able to work for the rest of your stay. Get to your local gym and ask the instructors what exercising you can do to be more fit and ready to hit the slopes. Lots of squats and much inner body core muscle exercise I would imagine.

Then, some people say that you should do some sort of sport that is close to snow skiing to get you used to the movement when skiing. I would think if you come from the warmer climates, you could try water wake boarding - being towed behind a boat - although that is going to prepare you for snowboarding more than skiing. Not sure what else you could try. Watch a ski instruction video, most ski apparel shops should have a video or two in stock which will give you good tips on how to ski; snowcat skiing.

You are going to need ski apparel, or we could say skiing clothing and protective gear; heli ski. The tip here is not to go for the best brand, but go for a brand that is average and which has a good name - normally the older styles will have stood the test of time. The important ski apparel item is the ski jacket, this is critical in either making or breaking a ski trip. Too light and you will be cold, too thick and you will not be able to move - if it does not breath properly, you will sweat and then your sweat will get cold and so will you. Also be sure that your jacket has enough packets, like the ski pass - often jackets have special pockets for ski passes and also keys and cellular phones.

The other item of ski apparel that is important are the pants, not as critical as the jacket, but it will also spoil your day if you are wet or cold; cat skiing. The other bit of ski apparel that is important are the layers/undergarments - things like long johns, like a t-shirt underneath or body suits, but the idea is that you can keep yourself warm even by just wearing the number of layers to protect you - just be careful of overdoing the number of layers as it affects your movement while skiing.

On the equipment side and especially for the first time I recommend that you hire your equipment - that way you are not stuck with them if you don’t enjoy skiing, take a good couple of thick socks to use with the ski boots - and a couple of big band aid plasters to put over the blisters! To fully enjoy the skiing, make sure you are fit, warm and flexible - just that can make all the difference to your skiing holiday.

How to Read Sports Betting Odds

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Sports betting can be one of the best types of investments that you can make, if you have the right information in front of you and can successfully handicap a game. To get this information, however, you are going up-to-the-minute injury reports, late coaching scratches, and last second odds moves. None of this will do you any good, though, if you don’t know how to effectively read sports betting odds.

Every sport has a different style of odds to master. Now, there are some similarities between baseball and hockey odds as well as the same type of similarity between basketball and football odds. In all, there is usually six major sports that people attempt to effectively handicap. Between collegiate and pro football, collegiate and pro basketball, baseball, and hockey, there are numerous options throughout the season for the savvy bettor to take advantage of.

Football/Basketball (both college and pro)

Football/basketball offers three types of bets: spread, moneyline, and totals. The most popular types of bets for these two sports is the spread bet. With this bet, you are giving your opinion on who you believe will “cover” the spread. For instance, let’s say that you’re watching the game between the Patriots and the Bills. The spread on this game is 8 points, which will read Patriots (-8) and Bills (+8). If you are betting on the spread and you pick the Patriots to win, you are saying that they are going to win by more than 8 points. Incidentally, sport betting on the Bills is saying that the Bills will lose by less than 8 points.

Moneyline bets in football/basketball are generally played by people who have large bankrolls that can afford the sometimes outlandish prices that are put down on a team. With these moneyline bets, you are strictly betting on who you believe will win the game, with no points being given or taken away. Be extremely careful because some moneylines can get very pricey (e.g. -1500 for a great team, +1500 for a bad team).

Totals bets are bets based upon whether you believe the combined sports scores of the two teams involved will go over or under whatever the posted total for that game is. Totals usually fluctuate by 0.5 points. The more money that comes in on a game total of 57 will drive that total up higher, say to 57.5 or 58. If the money is coming in on the under, the total will move down to 56.5 or 56.

Baseball/Hockey

Baseball/hockey offers three different types of bets: moneyline, runline/puckline, and totals. Moneyline totals are the easiest to comprehend because you’re betting specifically on who you think will win the game. There is no spread that goes with a moneyline bet, so you just want to pick out who you think is going to win and bet them accordingly. Be careful, however, because big time favorites (Yankees, Red Sox, etc.) usually have huge prices that you will have to pay when they are going up against perennial cellar-dwellers (Orioles, Royals, etc.) “Paying a huge price” means that these teams usually have odds of -200 or higher. The way to read this is that you will have to pay $200 to win $100, so as you can see the risk/reward ratio is a lot lower than if you were to be on the underdog’s price of +200, which means that every $100 bet you make will garner you $200 if that particular team is victorious.

Runlines/pucklines in baseball/hockey are always -1.5, which is basically like betting spreads in football games. You are picking which team you feel has a better likelihood of winning by more than 1.5 runs/goals (you would bet on Team A -1.5) or losing by less than 1.5 runs/goals (you would bet on Team B +1.5). Be careful here again, though, because sometimes the lottery prices get very expensive and are genuinely not worth the risk.

Totals are played exactly the same way that they are in football and basketball. The only exception with baseball/hockey is that the totals do not move as frequently. For instance, a total on the game between the Red Wings and Flyers might have a total of 5.5 goals. It is unlikely that the game total will change much from this number, instead you will see the individual prices for betting the totals (-110, +105, -125) fluctuate throughout different points of the day.

Basic Skiing Overview

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Snow can be the best plaything on Earth. One can have a snow ball fight and make a snow man with it. One can spend a chilly Sunday afternoon sledding down it until it is nothing but muddy mush and the snow clothes need cleaning. One can use it for a home like the Eskimos and polar bears do. One can snow ski on it, either for recreational purposes or for a professional competition. Regardless of what one is skiing for, it is always fun, until someone misses getting off of the chair lift! Watch out for that skier, it is a sign that they are a beginner and will run into you, if you are in their way.

In order to ski, one needs the right equipment. No one should be skiing in shorts and a tank top, but it has been done (and not well). If you are a beginner, you will be falling a lot, and mostly on your rear. Strapping a pillow to it will not help because it will just throw your balance off. So, get some warm, cushioned snow bibs, or a snow outfit, a nice warm jacket, woolen socks, because the electric ones do not really work all that well especially when they get wet, gloves, hat, ski boots, and skis and hit the slopes, preferably the bunny hill.

The bunny hill is the hill where people learn to ski. There will be ski instructors there with classes made up of kids who are in 1st grade to grandparents who have never skied in their lives. This is the best place for a beginner to be because it is a gentle slope with minimal trees and a very slow ski speed. Here, the beginner will be taught to ski by using the “snow plow” technique. This is where the skier begins moving and has their feet in a V shape. When they want to go faster, they move their legs a little closer together. When they want to stop, they push the V out farther. This gets them ready for the next stage of heliskiing, the green hill.

The green hill is still for beginners, but also for novice skiers. Not too many instructors will take their classes here because skiers are working on getting the techniques of starting and stopping down, taking a chance on how fast they can go, and gaining confidence. There may be a few more trees to line the green hill or runs, but they are not in the way of the skier. They are more of a natural fence than anything else.

The blue runs are for advanced skiers. Novice skiers should not try these runs until they are skiing down the green runs without stopping, falling, or feeling afraid. The blue runs contain steeper slopes which allow the skier to “slice” down the mountain instead of using the “snow plow” catskiing technique. There may be moguls which are bumps in the snow that a skier can either ski over or ski around, but these can throw a skier off balance and into the snow, if they are not careful. The moguls here are usually visible, to give the skier time to decide what they want to do to get over the mogul.

The black diamond and double black diamond runs are the hardest runs. They contain moguls, a steep slope, sharp turns, and other obstacles that an expert skier would know how to negotiate. The thing to remember about skiing is to never leave the trail. It could kill you.

Handicapping Sports and Sportsbook Sites

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Posted pointspreads can differ by a point or more on the same game, because lines are intended to evenly divide the wagering public’s opinion and, thus, their money. When a sportbook begins to receive more money on one side of a game than the other, they will likely move their line; however, due to the fact that there are so many gambling sportsbooks now, some houses may not receive as big of an imbalance of money as others, resulting in different lines for the same game.

Simple mathematics can easily establish the importance of “line shopping” or finding the best sports odds, as it can ultimately provide the difference between a profitable or losing week, month, or season. Random selections on 100 games should theoretically yield 50 wins and 50 losses. Assume for demonstration’s sake that 1 unit was wagered on each game. The result would be a net loss of 5 units due to the “vigorish” service fee taken by sportsbooks on each wager; however, if just FIVE of the defeats were within a point or two of the wagered line, and could have been won simply by finding a better pointspread, the result would be a 55-45 record and a net profit of 5.5 units. This is a reversal of more than 10 units on just a small number of events and with very conservative wagering. Even a half-point can be the difference between a win and a push or a push and a loss. Extrapolate the numbers over the course of a season with a more aggressive money management strategy and the gains are compounded dramatically.

Checking sports gambling odds at several sportsbook sites are an absolute necessity and can be done much more quickly now than before the days of the Internet.

As with any industry there are unscrupulous types to watch out for. Most of the offshore countries where sportsbooks are located require certain terms be met before they grant a license. Also, some countries are now beginning to legalize and regulate online gaming, the same as they do for other industries. Take your time in deciding who you will sign up with. Do your research on the various sportsbooks rules, promos, free sports scores, etc., to see if they meet your needs, and keep up to date with the latest sportsbook news.

Once your sportsbook accounts are funded, you are ready to find the best sports odds and put our handicapping and money management strategies to work for a rewarding and enjoyable sports investment venture with our Sports Handicapping Services.

Essentials of a good skiing boot

Monday, April 12th, 2010

You cannot begin your ski weekend without having the essential skiing equipments such as skiing apparel, skis, gloves, boots, helmet and goggles. We are going to take a look at the importance of having the correct boots when you go for a ski weekend.

Your feet are of utmost importance in skiing. The initiation of the twists and turns start with the feet, and the feet rest inside the boots, so we will first have a look at boots. Your boots should be comfortable, flex adequately and your feet should be in perfect alignment with your boot if you want to spend the ski weekend fruitfully. If they are not, your performance will be affected as you will not be able to balance properly.

If you have good knowledge about your feet and stance and know some terminologies, then you can get a good boot made from the supplier. There are three tests recommended to be taken to increase your knowledge. 1. Stance Test: It is essential that you have proper alignment between your feet and boot so that you can ski better on the ski weekend; catskiing. When you slowly bring your legs together, if your knees touch before your ankles, you are knock-kneed. But if the reverse happens, then you are bow-legged. To have stability, slightly knock-kneed stance is better.

2. Knee Tracking Test: Stand with your feet six to eight inches apart. Ask someone to measure the distance between your knees with a tape measure. Flex forward and ensure that your heels remain on the floor. Take the measurement again. If the distance increases or decreases, your foot is going inward or outward, respectively. Ideally, your knees should remain straight when you flex forward during skiing on your ski weekend. If they don’t, you may need the support offered by a foot bed, which is a custom insole moulded for your particular foot.

3. Ankle Flexion Test: It is imperative to find out whether you are channelising energy efficiently to the front of the boot during skiing on your ski weekend; heliskiing. To do so, stand with your feet six to eight inches apart. Flex forward and ensure that your heels remain on the floor. If you can flex the front of your knees forward to a point between the base of your big toe and approximately one inch beyond it, you have a good range of flexion. However, if your knees stop at midway or go way past the big toe, you need to have your boots flex-tuned for your lower body.

Take the results of all the three tests so that you can discuss this with your boot maker. Ensure that you get the best fit depending on the requirements of your body. You shouldn?t get shoe-bites or feel numbness in your feet while enjoying the ski weekend. Your boots should be light weight and be as if they are a part of your body.

Dart Boards and Pool Tables

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

In my own personal opinion these are the two most basic games you need in order to build yourself a game room for you and your buddies. If you only have a relatively small space dedicated for a game room, a dart board and a billiard table complete with a set of balls and Cue Sticks are all you need to start entertaining yourself and your friends. When it comes to talking about the dart board, you should know that there is a quite overwhelming diversity of products, and you can find the perfect dart board if you look around a little.

The dart board is one of the popular indoor games hands down.

While it is most famous in Great Britain, it is also very popular in the United States and numerous countries in Europe.

The reason for the high popularity of the dart board is the ease with which any player can enjoy a game. Sure, there are numerous levels of skill among dart board players, but it does not mean that absolute novices can’t have great fun playing this game.

This great game has no age limits, and it is as much fun for people in their eighties as it is for teenagers.

Because it is so simple to learn and master, and also because it is very comfortable to set up anywhere as it does not take almost any space, the dart board is one of the best games you can get for your home game room. Depending on your budget you can get a traditional one or an electronic one which keeps the score for each player. Billiard is also one of the most played games in all countries of the world, but considering the higher costs related to purchasing a pool table and all the accessories such as cue sticks, balls, chalks, and so on, you might want to direct your attention towards purchasing a used table.

Even if you decide to get a used pool table, it does not mean that you won’t be able to play high level pool.

It just means that you will have more money which you can use for accessories. More specifically, you can purchase higher quality billiard balls, you can replace the felt with a new one, and of course purchase higher grade cue sticks.

In fact, these two products you are more likely have to replace, the table cloth and the cue sticks. By doing so, you will ensure a much high game quality.

Of course, you will have to take care of other aspects also, such as the quality of the main components of the billiard table. These more important components include the table board, the main structure which you need to pay a closer attention to if it is constructed out of wood, the legs, and the side cushions.

Some of the World’s Best Ski Sports

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Many of us have had holidays spent breathing recycled air in “luxury” coaches, watching bad television in hotel rooms, eating beyond our capacity simply because meals were included in the “package” and there was little else to do. Yawn! But not if there’s snow on the ground; don the long johns and get at it .

1. Austria: skiing for amateurs - So maybe you’re not the athletic type. You don’t have to be to take advantage of the world’s best sporting havens, particularly if you take a few professional lessons. St. Anton, in the Arlberg region of Austria, is the best place to go for ski instruction-the Arlberg School ski technique originated here and the area’s 300+ instructors are all well-versed in the method. In the hands of these pros, you’ll look like an expert after a few days on the slopes.

2. Chile’s best skiing for mamas’ boys (sorry.we mean “cautious athletic types”) - If you’ve got nothing to prove and just want some sane, safe skiing, La Parva, located just minutes from Santiago, allows you to ski heli ski from your lodge to the lifts. If you’re afraid of getting hurled into a tree, there’s no need to worry here: the mountains are treeless. The slopes also have wind-curled cornices, so snowboarders can afford to try out a few new stunts. This is also a perfect spot to try heli-skiing in a friendly, nurturing environment.

3. Ski Whistler Blackcomb before the next Olympians do! When it comes to skiing and riding, Whistler Blackcomb with its 8,000 plus acres of terrain on both mountains, has variety and then some. Choose from steeps, deeps, chutes, high alpine bowls, glades, superb corduroy, long cruisers and gentle rollers. Riders and skiers will revel in the Parks and Pipes on both mountains plus natural launch pads, hits, wind-lips, cornices, cliff drops and ridges - the place is like a huge, natural terrain park! And the night-life is great too! This is the site of the next Winter Olympics.

4. World-class cat skiing for coupon clippers…in the Italian Alps - Sure, you’d love to go on a ritzy ski holiday but you’re - well, how can we put this? …broke. No worries. We appreciate a good bargain ourselves and have found that the deals in life are often a mere stone’s throw away from the pricey stuff. Such is the case in the Italian Alps: Mount Livata and Pescasseroli are located very near Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy’s most popular resort, but offer affordable accommodation and similar access to facilities. Same goes for Val d’Ayas, which is located near pricey Courmayeur and Cervinia and offers lower lift prices, more challenging runs and fewer crowds.

5. And if that’s not cheap enough, there’s skiing in Spain - You can ski in Spain on a busker’s budget. While there is a certain aura about the Alps resorts in France, Austria, Italy and Switzerland, the Spanish Pyrenees area keeps up with the best of them (and certainly surpasses them with respect to value.) Baquiera-Beret, in Lerida, boasts a lengthy ski season (November through April), numerous slopes of varying difficulty, plenty of chair lifts, professional ski instruction and - this is the best part - far fewer crowds than the pricier resorts. A good place to stay is Hotel Montarto which offers spectacular views and easy access to lifts.

6. If you think you’re a good skiier, try heli-skiing in the Purcells in British Columbia - Rk Heliski in Golden, welcomes you to 1,500 square kilometres/ 930 sq. miles of incredible terrain in the spectacular Purcell Mountains, on the edge of the legendary Bugaboos. snowcat skiing/boarding tours are led by some of the world’s best mountain guides to access wide open alpine slopes, scenic glaciers and gladed forests dusted with annual snowfalls of up to 1,100 cm/36 feet. Some of this is extreme skiing, definitely not for the novice, but hey, who wants to live forever?

7. Austria’s least-known sport that’ll make you feel like a kid again - Austria’s Lake District boasts excellent ice-skating and skiing during the winter as well as water sports during the summer. The area around Wolfgangsee offers a little-known sport that’ll take you right back to your childhood. Mountain tobogganing involves carting a metal saucer-of-a-thing up a hillside (we recommend the chair lift as opposed to a hike) and descending on a metal track to the bottom. It’ll be the most invigorating five minutes of your life. Next step? Do it again!

8. And after lots of lessons and a stiff drink…Canadian daredevil’s dream - Canada’s ski-jump champs practice in Thunder Bay, Ontario, regarded as the world’s biggest jump. You’ve seen the Bond films - now it’s your turn. Mind you, there are also cross-country trails for beginners if you need to get up your confidence. The area includes four major Alpine areas. Daily flight service can be arranged from Toronto, Winnipeg and Minneapolis. This place can be crowded during peak season–who knew there were so many daredevils around?
